Part 2: Organizational Semiotics and ApplicationsInternational audienceTV is a highly social and massive media that is worldwide available. The Interactive Digital TV represents a new device that is still constructing its identity. Designing applications for it is a challenging task, partially because of its intrinsic complex context and the lack of theoretical and methodological referential to support design activities. In this paper, we argue for a Socially Aware Computing approach to the design of iDTV applications, articulating artifacts and methods from Organizational Semiotics and Participatory Design. A case study on requirements for the design of an iDTV application is situated in the practical context of a Brazilian broadcasting TV Company. The results show benefits of using informed artifacts and methods in participatory and situated practices, indicating that it is possible and viable to make socially aware design in industrial settings

Observational Studies About Novices Interacting In A Prolog Environment Based On Tools

    No full text
This paper examines the general issues related to the interaction of novices in a Prolog environment based on tools to support both the operational and the declarative aspects of the language. The tools are based on graphical representations for the Prolog program and for Prolog execution of programs. This research aims to investigate how students come to understand and integrate these different views of Prolog and how the tools affect their understanding of the language. Observations conducted during this study show that the novices had an initial conceptual model of the virtual machine. Such models guided their interpretation of the Prolog program and of the behavior of the machine. Their misunderstandings may be interpreted as having resulted from their current models. These models evolved during their interaction within the environment. The type of feedback created by the tools provided changes in the students perspective related to the knowledge being represented (program) and the interlocutor in the process (virtual machine), which led them to the construction of the conceptual model of the language. © 1995 Kluwer Academic Publishers.231-38910

    Social Awareness In Hci

Juan Pablo Hourcade informs about research that helps to successfully bring the benefits of computing technologies to children, older adults, people with disabilities, and other populations that are ignored in the design of mass-marketed products. Interaction design solutions should welcome the less capable without discriminating against them. A socially aware design involves the production and interpretation of meanings with those impacted by the design solution. Researchers at UNICAMP bring a systemic view to explore how technology shapes relationships in the world and design HCI accordingly. Organizational semiotics (OS) has been a fundamental theoretical frame of reference for this effort. Practices within that systemic view have been reinvented in semioparticipatory workshops (SPWs), performed with a diverse group of people throughout the design process.2146669Varian, H.R., Universal access to information (2005) Comm. of the ACM, 48 (10). , OctBaranauskas, M.C.C., Souza, C.S., Desafio 4: Acesso participativo e universal do cidad? TV is an artifact present in 90% of Brazilian homes and it is the main source of information for a major part of the population. The moment of definition and consolidation of an interactive digital TV technology in Brazil provides us with a unique opportunity to cope with the digital divide issues. Making sure that iDTV contents and devices are flexible enough so that people are able to perceive, understand and interact with them is an essential requirement for the democratization of information via TV broadcasting. This paper investigates the basis for setting an interactive digital TV in Brazil by analyzing the Brazilian scenario and by proposing recommendations for the design of accessible user interfaces for iDTV applications; this basis is illustrated with the design of ciT-goV, a t-gov application prototype. An Inclusive Approach To Cooperative Evaluation Of Web User Interfaces

    No full text
Accessibility has been one of the major challenges for interface design of Web applications nowadays, especially those involving e-government and e-learning. In this paper we present an inclusive and participatory approach to the Cooperative Evaluation of user interfaces. It was carried out with an interdisciplinary research group that aims to include students with disabilities in the university campus and academic life. HCI specialists and non-specialists, with and without visual disabilities, participated as users and observers during the evaluation of a Web site designed to be one of the communication channels between the group and the University community. This paper shows the benefits and the challenges of considering the differences among stakeholders in an inclusive and participatory approach, when designing for accessibility within the Universal Design paradigm.HCI6570Bergman, E., Johnson, E., Towards Accessible Human-Computer Interaction (1995) Advances in Human-Computer Interaction, , Nielsen, J. One of Brazilian's grand challenges in computer science research concerns a "Participative and universal access to knowledge for the Brazilian citizen". In order to develop design solutions to address this challenge, we first need to understand these citizen's abilities and the context in which they are immersed. For that, we have been conducting practices actively involving a group of representatives of the diversity of users we have in the population. This paper presents the first results of this investigation, pointing out some lessons learned so far regarding the relationship they have with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and how they make sense of different models of interaction to accomplish a simple task related to the exercise of citizenship. Among other findings, we were able to notice how their previous experience reflects on their behavior and the benefits of using an avatar in future systems. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.272143154(2006) Anatel, , http://www.anatel.gov.br, Accessed 12 Feb 2008Casa Brasil, , http://www.casabrasil.gov.br, Accessed 12 Feb 2008Chand, A., Anind, K.D., Jadoo - a paper user interface for users unfamiliar with computers (2006) CHI, , MontréalDrucker, P., Sociedade Pós-Capitalista. Information and communication technologies are ever more present in our lives. Considerations about daily, emotional and contextual issues have been necessary in the HCI agenda for a design that is suitable for contemporary devices and uses, and also for an increasingly diversified audience. Based on an analysis of titles found in the full program of two major conferences in the field of HCI (ACM CHI and IFIP Interact), this work intends to identify the main focuses of the contributions over the last few years. Results of analysis based on tag cloud representations and comparison of collected data are presented and discussed; they reveal gaps, similarities and differences between what has been discussed in those forums and the trends indicated by research references in the field.3134142Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC)(1996) Curricula for Human-Computer Interaction, , ACM SIGCHI, by Hewett, Baecker, Card, Carey, Gasen, Mantei, Perlman, Strong and Verplank Copyright © 1992(2012) ACM SIGCHI, , http://www.sigchi.org, Retrieved from, on Jun 15, 2012Bannon, L., Reimagining HCI: Toward a more human-centered perspective (2011) Interactions, 18 (4), pp. 50-57Bateman, S., Gutwin, C., Nacenta, M., Seeing things in the clouds: The effect of visual features on tag cloud selections (2008) HT'08, Nineteenth ACM Conference on Hypertext and Hypermedia, pp. 995-998. , ACM PressBødker, S., When second wave HCI meets third wave challenges (2006) NordiCHI'06, 4th Nordic Conference on Human-computer Interaction: Changing Roles, pp. 1-8. , ACM PressBuchdid, S.B., Baranauskas, M.C.C., IHC em contexto: O que as palavras relevam sobre ela (2012) IHC'12, 11th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems, pp. 199-208. , ACM PressHarrison, S., Tatar, D., Sengers, P., The three paradigms of HCI (2007) Alt.CHI, CHI'07, pp. 1-18. , ACM Press(2013) Merriam-Webster, , from:http://www.merriam-webster.com, Retrieved, on Jun 05, 2012Kuo, B.Y.-L., Hentrich, T., Good, B.M., Wilkinson, M.D., Tag clouds for summarizing web search results (2007) WWW200, 16th International Conference on World Wide, pp. 1203-1204. , ACM PressPorter, M.F., An algorithm for suffix stripping (1980) Program, 14 (3), pp. 130-137Rivadeneira, A.W., Gruen, D.M., Muller, M.J., Millen, D.R., Getting our head in the clouds: Toward evaluation studies of tagclouds (2007) CHI'07, SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, pp. 995-998. , ACM PressSellen, A., Rogers, Y., Harper, R., Rodden, T., Reflecting human values in the digital age (2009) Communications of the ACM, 52 (3), pp. 58-66(2012) TC13, , http://www.tc13.org, Retrieved from, on Jun 10, 2012(2013) Wordle, , http://www.wordle.net, Retrieved from, on Jan 10, 201

Design With Children: A Semiotic Approach [design Com Crianças: Uma Abordagem Semiótica]

    No full text
Human-Computer Interaction literature has shown the importance of bringing the user to the process of software design and several methodological proposals have been discussed. This type of user involvement in design is not emphasized in the same way in software design for children. In this paper we propose a method based on Semiotic theory for understanding the child's process of signification for design elements in the Internet media, and reflecting this understanding in the design of a portal for children. Our approach draw upon techniques from Participatory Design (PD) and concepts from Organizational Semiotics (OS). PD has shown usefulness in the investigation of children's conceptions for Internet spaces, and OS has shown a sound theoretical approach to represent in ontology charts children's signification to elements of design. The proposed methodology is illustrated with the design process of Caleidoscopio Jr: A Web portal for children designed with them.466978Baranauskas, M.C.C., Barcellos, G.C., Design for collaboration: Enabling cooperative work among children (2001) Proceedings of PEG2001, , Tampere, FinlandiaBaranauskas, M.C.C., Melo, A.M., Construindo significados para o espaço infantil na internet: A criança como parceira (2002) Proceedings of IHC2002, pp. 274-285. , 2002Barcellos, G.C., (2000) Estudo e Desenvolvimento De Ambientes De Aprendizado Colaborativo a Distância Para o Contexto da Educação Inclusiva, , Dissertação De Mestrado, IC, UnicampBarcellos, G.C., Baranauskas, M.C.C., Interfaces para comunicação eletrônica e o contexto da criança (1999) Em: WIE, 1999, Rio De Janeiro.
